Dear Students, The leaves are falling from the trees, and soon rain will be falling from the sky. The next two months will need all of our concentration, attendance, and hard work to prepare for the final portfolio submission the second week of December. Most of you have been following our class bog,and I have been following most of your individual blogs. But I still have yet to find some of you. You need to be up and running for the next ten weeks with a minimum of 500 words 'blogging' per week to satisfy the requirements for submitting your portfolio. I'm really eager for you to take charge of your reading and writing requirements rather than waiting for me to give you assignments and assign 'grades.'
By now most of you have also completed the Library Research Roadmap, but not all of you have.
Finally, for the rest of the semester, I expect you to bring a draft of one of your manuscripts for some kind of response each class period. We will continue to do small groups, conferences, and 'read-arounds' (T/Th class will learn about that tomorrow) until portfolios are due.
Stay healthy and come to class. s

Critical thinking and the ability to write clear, well-reasoned prose are necessary for a thriving participatory democracy, and as the first line of defense against totalitarianism.
We had to evaluate the reading "Why We Built the Ivory Tower" by Stanley Fish. in my opinion the reason it was built was to help students enroll in higher education so that they can fit in and be productive in the world. The paper said how professors are there to inturpret the world not to change it. And in my opinion i think that we built the ivory tower for opportuinty! So people of all races and ethnic standings would be able to go and make something of themselves in the world. In some cases its a once in a lifetime experience or maybe they are forced to go. But either way it is the stepping stone to making it in the real world and to be able to support there families with a good paying job. And then there are the other cases where people just want to change the world and the ivory tower has made that possible for people all over the world.
ReplyDeleteI was reading the passage "Why We Built the Ivory Tower" by Stanley Fish and I found it quite thought-provoking. He refers to Marx stating that it's not our job to interpret the world, but rather change it. According to Fish, he says that in the Academy, it's vice versa, we are to not change the world, but to interpret. I believe he's noting that the outside real world is completely different to the Academic world. I always in turn thought that going to college is the real world and that we acquire the necessary skills and knowledge so we can receive our degrees. I'm going to agree with what Morgan said, how the Ivory Tower was built for opportunity, specifically equal opportunity so everyone has a chance to do what they want to do with the rest of their lives.
ReplyDeleteWe had to read and analyze the passage "Why We Built the Ivory Tower" by Stanley Fish. My favorite part of the article was the fact that the author referred to the quote by Marx saying, "it's not our job to interpret the world, but rather change it." The ivory tower was made so all different types of people can have an opportunity at the same thing and a chance to be happy and successful. Young adults need a transition from being in high school to going into the real world. College is that transition of becoming a part of the world. I also believe that the ivory tower was built for opportunity.
ReplyDeleteHungry For America
ReplyDeleteKyla Hockman
We chose this article because it was relevant to today’s issues as well as being informative about those issues. It referred to the want to be American and have the same dream that started the country. They want us to not automatically attack others, by primitive attacks. People in other countries want America to pay for their studies and wars. The hope of America becoming a helpful hand to the poorer countries simply can’t be done. There are however several countries that have anti American sentiment. The Article is also referring to nine eleven. There are some that believe that America’s primitive attacks are necessary to keeping the world in order, however they do not incompetence reckless or it to become their enemies. Some countries believe that America should have a stronger role in the world. The United States citizens also want a stronger role in world affairs, more then sixty percent want this. There also needs to be more money spent upon development and travel development. There is a belief that there should be a change in the way that America behaves. Although the United States doesn’t get as much done as other countries wish, they still want their leadership. The opinion seemed to shift from side to side; it was rather hard to understand the point that the author was getting across. It seemed to be interesting enough however it seemed somewhat long winded.
Today in class we were assigned in groups to look up an interesting story or argument in a book and then analyze it. Alot of the essays/articles in the book were not really interesting. Our group then finally found an interesting article about someone who reads cereal slogans and then comments about them. For example in the first page of the essay he analyses the coo coo for cocoa puffs slogan, a treasure in a cave full of marshmellows for your cocoa puffs.... On the next page he then talks about how some cereal companies promote dental care even though their cereal is full of sugar and food coloring. The author also comments on the way cereal companies use advertising to lure in children/adults. For example a bite full of electrified tastiness or helps lower your cholesterol. He also describes how cereal companies will put celebrities/athletes on cereal boxes to attract customers. I though this is an interesting article because I understand advertisement, the literature in it and how large companies use advertising to get people to buy their product. Even though the essay is about 5 pages long it's still very interesting to read about cereal slogans and what the author feels about them.
ReplyDeleteAfter being put into groups of four and handed a book in mondays class, my group and I than began to discuss what was next. After deciding whether we wanted to stay or leave the building we set down and discussed all that topics that might have been interesting to us. As i flipped through then index I began rehersing all the titles of the chapters to find out which interest my group the most. My group and I ended up choosing a topic that we all could relate to. From there on we begin to read the title of stories within that chapter. "Are you sure you want to do this?", quickly caught the attention of one of the members in my group. From then on we read the passge and all favored the topic in which we read. We all worked in an organized and orderly fashion to complete the task at hand. We found a topic, read and cover the material, and went about our day
ReplyDeleteThis week in class we had to get into groups of 4 and pick an article from a book. My group scanned decided to go to the library where we could concentrate on which article we wanted to choose. We scanned through the titles of each of the stories and finally figured one out. We decided to pick “Hungry for America” we thought it seemed interesting and it was also a plus that the article was a little short because we didn’t really have enough time. Once we read the article we didn’t have too much time left to even pick another one to consider reading. In our group, each of us read a paragraph of the article and passed it around in a circle. It was a little difficult to understand, I felt like it was in a language I didn’t even know in a way. Once we all talked about the article as a group and each said what we thought the article was talking about, the information became a lot clearer. Our article is about how the United States always hypes up about doing something extraordinary but then never actually does it. It talks about how other countries think we’re all talk and no action. I believe that this article is entirely incorrect. I don’t agree with the statement that the United States is all talk and we never do anything about what we say. I personally didn’t like the article and found it false.

ReplyDeleteMy group chose an article on cereal. I know it might sound irrelevant to our theme but I disagree. It has a lot to do with society and how certain types of cereal categorize people. At first we were not interested in most of the articles; none of them just grabbed our attention, so we did a process of elimination. On the table of contents listed the articles by genre and by the main theme of the articles. For example, there were five articles that read about processes and how certain things work, however, one of those articles was listed under the Relationships category, explaining how a break-up works. So we decided to go by the main themes. We narrowed it down to the Society theme, and then we read the articles and picked the one about cereal. We found it interesting how the author talked about society using cereal. The way the article is arranged might give the class a little trouble but it’s still pretty fascinating. The genre of the article is Classification and Definition. We did not know what that genre consisted of until after we read it and discussed and came up with our own meaning.

ReplyDeleteI think Garry’s Trudeau’s article was insightful and a successful auto ethnography. I respect his vulnerability and honesty. I think Trudeau is right in the sense that we never stop being short; meaning we never truly lose who we once were. Every experience in one’s life contributes to they’re actions and reactions in life. Especially, when people are young. Taunting and abuse leaves deep scars in the emotional exterior of a human. Trudeau, much older now, still recalls the inconveniences of being short.
People run away from themselves all their lives, but I think Trudeau makes an important point, to recognize whom one is and whom one has been. This is why Trudeau’s auto-ethnography is successful. He captures the essence of this topic without ever having to directly say his point. His way of writing is the embodiment of an auto-ethnography and I will most definitely use his as a reference.

What does University mean to me? I have always thought of University as a tool, a tool to help me understand myself, to travel, to broaden my perspective, to learn, to teach, to make more money, and most importantly, to be a place of a greater understanding. Although I’m conscious of the multiple purposes of University, I doubt my decision; why am I here? Why am I pulling my hair out stressing about the math test? The math test that makes the grade, the grade that gets the degree, the degree that gets the job, and so on and so forth. University has become another block in my personal hierarchy of needs.
There are days when I see University as an enlightening experience, but then I think of the price this alleged enlightenment is costing; is it worth the tuition my parents pay each semester? I turn to my business side and say, I’m here to make a better life for my future family and myself, but that doesn’t sit well either. Then I turn to my social side and say, I’m here to make life long friends, but when these people don’t walk into my life, I feel defeated. I know why University is important, and yet I find myself wondering if it’s worth it.
Even if I can’t fully know why I decided to go to college, I know what I expect. University so far has been a big change for me, if not the class work, than certainly the atmosphere and experiences. I think the most important thing University is supposed to do for it’s students, is to give them many new perspectives. Be it the professors or peers, a student should graduate from college with a collection of glasses; glasses representing all the different way to look at life. I hope when I graduate from College, I have this collection, so that my mind will be open.
In class we were to read and analyze an article by Stanley Fish titled “Why We Built the Ivory Tower”, which was about the purpose of college. I believe that college doesn’t just serve the simple purpose of transferring information from professors into the minds of students. College is about preparing students for the real world so that they can function well and have a successful career that hopefully relates to the major of the student. College is also about being in a place where you can have fun and wizening experiences that you can remember for the rest of your life. College is also about meeting new people and making connections for future jobs. But you can’t forget that one of the important parts of college is also learning and retaining valuable information that will help you specialize in a field of your choice so that you can have a decent paying job that you will also enjoy for the rest of your life or at least for a sufficient amount of time.

ReplyDeleteThis week in class are teacher had five books laid out on the table each group was assigned one. We also were instructed to pick an article from the book to discuss. our group decided on The Anti-heroes: The LA4. The reason we chose this was because it is about two different trails very similar facts and circumstances but very different outcomes. the main reason why i feel that the article caught my eye along with my group members was because it was about the Rodney king case along with gang activity in the LA area. which interested us because we have been around and are familiar with that area. the length of the article also weighed into the decision making process.
This reading was about a trial that didn't get to much publicity around the Rodney king trial but was very similar the main difference was instead of four white men beating up a black man it was four black men beating up a white man. the main argument was that the colored men suffered far greater consequences then the white men for being involved in very similar crimes. a strong message i took from this passage was said by a girl early on talking about how it wasn't right what the officers did to Rodney king and it wasn't right what the people did to the truck driver in the LA4 case . but if the white men could get off why couldn't the colored men get off to.

Reading Response #5 by Alyssa Fraijo:
ReplyDeleteOn Monday, Susan split everyone up into groups and gave each group a different book to read and discuss the main points on. Each book contained numerous articles about different topics, explaining what it’s all about and the points of view on them. My group was given a book that contained an article about being in a gang and why people still are in them today. My group consisted of three people so, in turn, we each had at least a page and half to read. The article started off explaining of course, that gangs are bad and went on to describe bad situations in which people can find themselves in. As we read on, I listened carefully to the reasons why, after years of proving that gangs are basically a death sentence, people would still want to be in a gang. The reasons behind this desire can be because of family, love of violence, to be “cool,” to make friends, for drugs, or for acceptance. These reasons are in no way an obligation to join a gang and is dangerous for kids to actually think this. Even if being a member doesn’t affect you personally, it will affect the people you love and the people around you. It’s crazy to find out how many people actually think being in a gang is cool and how many people want that style of life.
The article concluded by explaining ways to keep occupied and how to lead a less dangerous lifestyle.
I enjoyed reading this article about gangs, it could really benefit someone who has been or is in a gang by practicing methods to get out and go on with life.
Last week our teacher split us up into 5 groups and gave us a book to pick out our choice of article for one of the upcoming reading responses. My group picked Romantic Relationships Between Falculty and Students: Should Colleges Prohit Them? We picked this article because the title looked pretty intresting and very different from the rest that we saw. At the beginning of the article they reference the movie Legally Blonde and how her law professor invites her into his office and puts his hand on her leg while "discussing her future"..... After this incident she almost leaves law school but pushes through and falls in love with Emmett who is her cocounsel on a case.. This scence shows how twisted the sexual politics of university life have become. The main reason why universities do not agree with these romantic relationships is because they are afraid of sexual harrasment lawsuits. Also they are afraid of grades maybe being altered because of a relationship and things would not be fair in the class room. And how the respect between and student and professor is no longer there. It sounds like they are treating both parties like if they are children but the issue is they are just protecting the university. But the important question is whether there are more reasonable ways to deal with this issue that probably affects universities world wide. For many students and professors the university represents virtually their entire world. If we let universities prohibit consenting adults from falling in love, what will be next?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading all of your posts. It helps me to know what is working in the class and what modifications I need to make in the future. From what I have read so far, having you choose the readings for class is a good idea, and one I should use in the future. At least no one thought it was boring.
ReplyDeleteReading Response 5
ReplyDeleteChoosing an article for a reading response was easy. I opened up the book given to our group of three and preceded to thumb through the index. I pointed out the topics of interest and asked my group members if they too we’re interested. They shook their heads in a yes motion, not really showing much of an opinion. Within the topics there were several articles relating to the theme. I read aloud the listed articles and we decided on a shorter well-written article called, “Americans Are Tuning Out the World.” The book is called America and the World and the article is under the chapter titled, “How do Others Perceive Us?”
I was curious about this article in particular and my group members didn’t seem to mind either way. We began “popcorn” reading the article, reading a page per person. After reading the article, our group had some extra time so I went to the back of the article reading the bolded titles called, Thinking About the Essay and Responding in Writing. I read a loud the following questions and thought out loud about some of the answers, in hopes I would have something to think about when writing my response. Still left with extra time, we returned to our seats in class.
Reading Response 6
ReplyDeleteOur group chose an interesting article called, “Americans Are Tuning Out the World” The writer, Alkman Granitsas, expresses statistics and examples of how America has become isolated. Although Granitsas never states his position clearly, his writing leads the reader to believe he is not in favor of an isolated America. Granitsas lists a few statistics, one of them being: “…in 1965, more than 16 percent of all American University students studied a foreign language. Now only 8.6 percent do.” He continues to give a couple more examples with the support of statistics. The two being: Less Americans buy passports or travel outside of neighboring countries Mexico and Canada and media coverage of foreign affairs has been diminishing.
I think it’s disturbing that America has become disconnected from the world; unfortunately it’s true. The Media has become corrupted and manipulated. The last big coverage of foreign affairs I can recall was the detrimental earthquakes in Haiti. The fact that the media shows no imagery of the Iraq war is even more saddening. The Media, or shall I say the Government completely detaches Americans of the War. Looking back to the 60’s, the television was a tool to see the disturbing images of War and now, America can be in a War and one would never know it.
The lack of traveling by Americans, I feel can be directly associated by the fact that less people are going to University. College is a great way to gain traveling opportunities, such as studying abroad or internships. Another correlating factor is the American job system. Europeans get at least a months time vacation or “holiday.” Americans do not get such a luxury. My family has been trying to return to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for four years now. My Father could never get enough time off when he worked for a corporate company, nor when he ran his own business. Time is money here in America.
This article was intriguing and sadly, a reminder. America may be a “melting pot”, but its time Americans step of their isolated bubble and gain a new kind of culture. It can’t be assumed Americans are allowed to seize the neutral mentality and yet instigate the wars of other countries. If Americans are going to engage in war, than they’d better start looking beyond the red, white and blue barriers of their upturned noses.
My group chose an article called "the ghetto made me do it". At first we couldn't really find an article that looked interesting enough to share with the class, but we started passing the book around our group, and one of the members landed on that one. The article is about a girl "Felicia Morgan" who grew up essentially living in fear at home. She mentioned how her parents would sit at the tables with loaded guns just in case anything happened. She was seven years old when this was going on. A quote that I remember from the article was "Mom shot dad...And Mom shot boyfriend". She was a victim of sexual abuse at a young age as well. I don't remember the whole article, and I don't want to give too many details before our group presents it, but it was a very compelling article and I think it will be very interesing for the class to hear.
ReplyDeleteTruth is an important factor, but is often an opinion. There are people who think it is important to be honest, and just as many who do not have a care for the world. At times lying can seem easy then telling the truth. People often go through phases of compulsive lying.
ReplyDelete"Honey, are you brushing your teeth?"
"Yes!" As the son wet his tooth brush under the faucet."
"One would say that "truth is just the love and take ahold. Truth is the feeling one has when being lied to--the honest truth of the lie. Then and there you know whether or not you've love, trusted and put yourself out there. For love of everything, but focusing on people.
Truth is like a jellyfish; beautiful and luminescent from afar. Once you grab ahold of that truth, that tentacle, you'll get shocked. Your body may break down, and the one thing that can hold it together is your ability to heal yourself again."
True to who? To me, or you? One for all and to all be true.
How about a divorce? What does that say about truth? That is one unlawful and costly lie to make. I warn you all to stay away from those. That is one truth malfunction that I will not find myself entangled in.
What is truth?
Truth is nothing. There is no such thing as truth because it is merely a word. This 'turth' is only an abstraction of the feeling of conformity of a fact in reality. What does that really mean? Something that I say can be true to me, in my reality, but false to others in their own separate reality.
This past monday in class, we were separated into groups to read and decide on an article to read to the class for upcoming reading responses. My group took our book titled “The People and Promise of California” and sat in the grass to discuss what article to choose. We first looked through the chapter titles, and decided on “Arrivals, Departures, and Culture Clashes” because it sounded the most interesting and potentially relevant to the class. Each chapter was separated into multiple articles and we chose “Kids and Gangs: Seeking Solutions” because gang violence is a seriously problem not only California but the world has to deal with. The article discusses why teens join gangs and what can be done to help prevent it but I believe they could have gone in more depth. The good thing about this is that it allows for the readers to respond with more information and there own opinion on what should be done. I personally have not experienced any kind of gang affiliation or gang violence but I know it does exist. The television show “Gang Wars” informs Americans about the gangs we have here in American and their violent tendencies. In order for the violence to stop, people need to be educated on why gang violence is bad and need another outlet for their emotions. More after school activities that don’t cost students money need to be put in place as well as more gun regulations. Children need more options for life and job situations so that they do not need to go to gangs to get support and love from others. Teens that join gangs are not joining because they want to be violent. They are joining because they have no where else to go. They want a family to love and support them and they find that in the gang life.
ReplyDeleteI was in Terrevia’s group that week. And I too recall us deciding to go outside and picking an article out of this book based off of how peculiar the title was. The title was “Are you sure you want to do this?” which I found particularly cheeky. We took turns reading the article which was about how lipstick is made and what goes in it. After reading this article I am not sure that I would ever want to where lipstick. This shouldn’t be an issue for me since I am a guy. Haha. I would definitely like to go back and read this article again because I do forget a significant amount of what the article was getting at. I think that it could potentially empower women to know that beauty products are potentially harmful to the body. I think beauty products: makeup specifically is a blessing and a curse. I think it is great for those ladies that feel like they have something small they want to blush over or cover up. Or those that use a bit of mascara or eye shadow to extenuate their eyes. But when finding out that lipstick and stuff has such an array of crap in it… I feel like women should feel discouraged from having to slop on pounds of make up at a time. In this western culture that we live in that has such an unrealistic, plastic sense of beauty I think that women can and should feel empowered to know that makeup and lipstick, specifically, are not healthy.
ReplyDeleteThis is, partially, in response to nevinpc’s comment. I do recall, in class, when we read and analyzed an article by Stanley Fish titled “Why We Built the Ivory Tower”, which was indeed about the purpose of college. I agree with nevinpc, I don’t think the sole purpose of college is to transfer information from the minds of professors to the minds of their students. While I do think this information exchange is definitely going on. I don’t think this is the sole purpose of college or school, in general. I know, speaking from my personal experience at HSU thus far, that college is about so much more than that. It is about figuring out what you want to do in your future, learning about all sorts of different subjects, and the honing in on that one or two subjects that grabs you the most and making a major and eventually a career out of it. I don’t think a lot of people come into college knowing what they want to do when they grow up. And I think that figuring that out while you’re here is natural. College, to me, has also been about learning lessons about myself, who I am, and what I want out of my life, in general. It has also been about having fun and meeting new people ;) So cheers to college! One of the most exciting places to be! Whether you’re a student experiencing this all for the first time or a wise teacher who gets to pass on their knowledge and wisdom to the youth: college is an awesome thing!
ReplyDeleteI was put into a group of three people where we were told to chose an article of our choice. This article was about the the advances of lacking privacy that parents have towards their children through advancing technology. Parents are now able to know exactly where their children are through cell phone technology. There are tracking device chips implanted into cell phone which are used for parents to stock their kids. Parents have even gone so far to connect the video unto of their children's computer to watch their every move. This article explained that a lot of this spying and tacking is done without the child's consent or even knowledge that it is happening.
ReplyDeleteI do not think this is beneficial to anybody. A family or any type of close relationship is based on trust an loyalty. If a child knows that there parents are not trustworthy and are tracked by technology they loose trust and loyalty but to his/ her parents. This will only lead to children wanting to rebel more. Also, what about when this child is out of their parents hand and off to college? It is proven that children that grow up in a household with strict regulation do not survive in college; a lifestyle in which there is little to no regulations. If a child has been under camera surveillance by his or her parents growing up, every situation that they are not under camera they will be believe that they are free to do anything they want, without getting caught. Parents must learn to trust through ways that do not involve technology.
A University in my eyes can be defined as a more productive and laid back prison. We are sent away for x number of years, away from out friends and family. But instead of committing a crime to be accepted, it took much more work than this. All of our adolescent years we spent practicing schooling until high school, where we took tests and earned grades that counted in being accepted into another even higher level school. During our first year attending a University, all first timers, or freshman are assigned to live in tall stacked building were the rest of there class lives. Cubicles only large enough to fit two small beds and a desk. People are matched up with someone they have never met and are forced to take showers in the facilities. New regulations and codes of conduct must be followed, or punishment follows. Unlike harsh prison life, these freshman get a few strikes before anything really serious happens. We are also allowed to leave these little cubicles, but still have a daily schedule we must receive to leave this institution with success. This is where universities and prisons differ: the longer you misbehave in a prison, the longer you stay. And the longer you misbehave in a university, the sooner you will be kicked out. This education prison is a very special environmental. We are surrounded by young people who are for the first time living on their own and choosing to continue education. This is why I enjoy attending a University. Everyone attending is either paying to be here, and if not some one if. People who slack of and do not have purpose are given little respect; they are wasting time. This prison that many humans decide to attend is challenging and sometimes painful, but is indeed life changing.
ReplyDeleteIn class we read an autho-ethnography article by Gray Trudeau. He talked about life growing up short, and the effects that it still has on him as a full grown man. Being bullied for an extended period of one's life often never leaves a person. The way that Gary told his story got me involved emotionally, which explained to me a key factor when writing purposeful auto-ethnography. Trudeau brings up an important point of recognizing who people are and who they have been. At this part of any college students life, it is hard to depict the past of a fellow peer and realize how that has effected them to make the person they are today. In high school, it is easy to see why people are the way they are, we have grown up with them since we can remember. As I have been forming closer relationships with people in Arcata I can now start to depict my personality traits of friends that are caused by past experiences. Some people have told me about the past, filling in the pieces of the puzzle. This has helped me gain background information with others by guessing and relating similar personality traits to the ways in which they were raised.
ReplyDeleteIt is really easy to tell people that have lost a lot of weight. Some with become over confident when rewarded with an attractive body, while others cannot get over the horrible experiences of being picked on while growing up. It is also easy to tell is someone is an only child or raised with fellow siblings. One housemate and I are very communal, we share food, pick up after ourselves and each other, and are good at taking turns. However my second housemate was raised as an only child, she is a bit neurotic, does not like her things to be touched and especially does not like to change. I enjoy trying to figure out structures in family especially.
