The World Series

Dear Students: Tomorrow starts the World Series with the SF Giants playing for the first time in many baseball seasons. They have been preparing for this opportunity for years, actually. Their situation is not that different from yours. You have been learning the rules and processes of writing since you entered school, and for the past several seasons, you have been practicing and learning the fine points of the craft. This semester, I have been trying to get you to work as a team to improve your performance, and soon, your portfolio is due--The Pennant Race of Freshman Comp. I believe that working together, all of you can succeed. But, winning takes team work, and for that to be useful in our class, you need to bring not only yourselves, and brains, but also your manuscripts to class. This is the final stretch of the season.

I also want to remind you to continue to post on the class--this blog--and on your personal blog. I will be counting entries and, if I have to, words to make sure you have fulfilled the 500 words a week requirement. Most of you will have exceeded the minimum requirement since you often post more words than necessary each entry even if you have fewer than twenty entries for the semester. Starting this week, your classmates will be presenting the weekly reading assignment.

A final reminder, we will not have class on Nov. 2 so you can vote and attend an event sponsored by the Dialogue on Race. We will also not have class on Nov. 11, since the campus will be closed down in observance of Veteran's Day.

Next week's blog will give you additional information on the portfolio requirements.

Happy blogging. Susan

  1. So i know i am way behind in my Reading Responses. I gave you my absenty voting ballot thing on Monday in class so i know that excuses one. So i dont know what else to write about for a response so i thought i'd respond to this blog entry.

I watched the World Series yesterday and i was scared. I know the Giants havent been there for a very long time and i wanted them to win badly. Why I was scared I'm not sure. I was nervous for them. And after reading your metaphor about how we finally made it to this stage in our writing Career i knew why. I was scared because i wanted them to win and its a similar feeling i get before i start a new paper. Things go through my mind like "is it going to be good enough, is it going to long enough, is it going to follow the rubric?".... I get anxious and my thoughts dont come out right at first. Just like the first 5 innings of the Giants game, the beginning of my writing process for a new essay sucks. But after a few read overs and the use of a thesaurus My essay starts to look good. Like a "major league" essay, a "grown-up" essay. And i am proud. and just as the Giants dominated the Rangers last night i end up dominating my essay. It no longer scares me. And in the end i win the world series that is college english

  2. In class today we read a review about a new video game. It showed how to write a proper review and how reviews are written. It contained some information while not giving detailed descriptions of the game and made me want to play it. We discussed how a good review would make you wish that you attended that event, if a positive review, or that you were glad that you stayed home, if negitve. We talked about how to review something and it made me feel more ready to write my own paper

  3. The World Series is a big deal this year for people from The Bay Area. Although I am not a Giants fan, I am from the Bay Area, and we haven't had any sports team make it to any playoffs for a while. It is bittersweet for me, the A's are not in the World Series and had a pretty bad year, however another Bay Area team is in it. I am hoping that the series will be a fun and exciting one considering the pitching for the Giants is excellent, and the hitting for the Rangers has proven to be the best in all of Baseball. If either team wins I will be happy; however, I would of course like to see the Bay
area team come out on top

    Reading Response #6

In class we read a review on a game for the Nintendo. The review was written by a well known critic who gave the game (Kirby ???) a 4, well a man falling out of a chair laughing but same thing, which means its very good.
This example about the review allowed us to see how one is set up. In the review the author did not say the game was good, but used indirect language to describe his feelings about the game. There was some compare and contrast, as well as some use of other references to describe the game. He also used humor to draw in the readers.
Though this is only one example of a review, this allowed me to visualize how to start my review at the very least.

  5. Reading Response #4
My group's article "The Ghetto Made Me Do It", touched on the issue of inner-city residents who suffer from PSTD and other psychological ailments stemming from lifelong exposure to violence. In this case, a girl Felicia "Lisa" Morgan, as a teenager, commited six armed robberies and an intentional homicide. She killed a girl at point-blank range after robbing her. Although these robberies as well as the homicide are very violent acts, this is a huge issue that needs to be addressed on another level. Morgan's violent metality is linked to her upbringing of seeing violence all around her as a norm. Sure she is being incarcerated for her actions, but is that really the right way to stop the violence? She needs counceling, she needs some break from the violence occuring in her life if she is ever going to break the pattern, and prison is not the best place for that change. Its a sad story, but a true one. The cycle is ongoing, and doesnt look like its going to be stopped anytime soon.

  6. today my teacher read a review from a paper about a new nintiendo video game. The new game was called Kirbys Epic Yarn. during this article the author was able to present the facts while having a bias opinion. he stated the positives and the negatives of the game but never really tells if it is good or not which is what our teacher wanted us to get out of the article. we are going to be writing a review ourselves and we need to learn how to present the facts not all opinions. during the reveiw he made clever refernces and made the review interesting to read. During the review he doesnt just summerize the game, but gives a full sensory description of the game. he talks about whom the audience may be. he also talks about the difficulty of the game. all together this review was a good example of how to write a review and it will most likely help me write my review.

  7. Blogging is an interesting experience! I have never had the opportunity to blog before and I am super grateful that you decided to encorporate this into our class. I like all your topic posts, Susan, and I enjoy reading everyone’s comments. The open forum for discussion that blogs provide us is a great way to stay in touch with what other people are thinking in such a modern, detached era. I do as well recall you reading the video game review to us in class. I thought this was awesome. Never, in a million years, would I have guessed that my English 100 teacher would be game for reading a review of a Kirby video game. I definitley do appreciate it. Especially, now, that I am editing and revising my third essay an analytical/descriptive review of the film “La Mission”. I realize that the paramaters for reviewing a film are broad. And the review of the video game that you read to us helped me feel this way. People always react differently to movies, music, and games and I am grateful to have the opportunity to review a film and voice my opinion. I think film review is kind of a subjective, opinion based genre of writing. But, at the same time, it does require a good deal of analysis and in depth thinking. I hope my film review lives up to others, in the past.

  8. During the week of Dialogue on Race I attended the event "Politics Terror and Resistance: A teach in on Latin Immigration." We discuss different areas of issues with immigration, then got into groups the expand and write out our thoughts on posters. The first issue we cover were the media's problem with immigration. They explain that immigrants are taking our jobs, bringing crime and poverty and are corrupting school systems. Illegal immigrants are using up our money and are not contributing back. The media describe them as "sucking off out society." Although these are all issues of how they affect America we must bring up the question of why they are coming over here? Latino's are coming over the border in risk of their lives to live in poor conditions with low pay jobs. Conditions being not the rewarding yields that the ways they lived previously were even worse. Also, what jobs are they even taking? A common complaint of Americans outlook of immigration is that they are taking out jobs. The jobs that immigrants work in are low pay and conditions, most likely on fields. What kind of American really wants that kind of job anyways. The name illegal alien alone give a bad association with these people. Rather then giving them a title that describes a creature from space illegal introducing, people need to label them as undocumented workers. Another possible reason for leaving could be the lack of resources. For example, if their water supply is polluted and they cannot afford or locate fresh water, they would flee to the states. Water is vital to life and society; there should not be any blame for trying to enter for this reason. Environmental protection policies vary much in Mexico than in The United States. They could be lacking laws that ensure clean water and lack of other pollutants. I enjoyed the structure of this event by not just a two hour factual lecture. We got into groups and used our own minds together to come up with questions. This method is more effective by using your brain to critically think about an issue. Groups were filled with people with different knowledge and backgrounds which brought a lot to the table. We gained environmental, political, and health reasons for Latino immigrants crossing the border
People also do not know what type of government runs Mexico. Do they have human rights? How about personal freedom? These are all questions that do not cross the minds of most Americans. During this event we to did not know the answer to these question, but at least brainstormed all the reasons for leaving. Knowing the answer or not informed me of all the possibly reasons for why they are leaving. People need to open their eye outside of this closed American bubble in order to realize world problems. If Latino's are risking their lives and the lives of their family there has to be a liable for leaving their country. They are uninformed of punishments of entering the United States, all that it is their mind is that it will be better.
