Critical thinking and the ability to write clear, well-reasoned prose are necessary for a thriving participatory democracy, and as the first line of defense against totalitarianism.

November 1, 2010 Go, Giants!

Dear Students,

Remember, tomorrow, Nov. 2, you have a different schedule. Instead of attending class, you are to vote and go to a session on the Campus Dialogue on Race. If you are in the M/W/F class, you are also expected to vote tomorrow, if you haven't already voted absentee, and you are also to attend a session on the Dialogue on Race instead of attending class on Wednesday. I will see everyone as usual on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Remember, your next paper is to be a critical review/ analysis of an event, performance, presentation, etc., and you may use the event you attend this week. Even if you do not write your essay on this event, you must tell me and the class what you attended and your reactions on the class blog.

For those of you with four or more absences, you are at risk of failing. Please don't put yourselves in this position--it's a waste of your money and the time and effort you have already invested.

See you later this week.

  1. This analysis was very interesting and it had perfect timing on our classroom setting. Since it is a day before we voted it is in actuality a way to convince the readers to learn more about the world outside of America. In the article, the author used colorful language to encourage people to know what is going on in other countries inside of being selfish and subjected to their own worlds when everything is up to par. It was proven in this article that people who are in America feel almost like they are in the best place ever sitting on top of this sunny mountain that blinds them from the rest of the obscure world. I agree with this writer because from my prior knowledge I have noticed how people only speak up when they have a problem with a situation. After teacher reading this article my teacher took a in class survey of raised hands who are taking a foreign language and only two people raised their hands. This shows that most students do not even consideration inquire more knowledge about traditions outside of the Americas. Why do Americans tune out the rest of the world ?

  2. Last week in class we talked about our next assignment that we were supposed to partake in. Susan said that we had to pick an event that was going to happen on campus and we had to write a 3 page essay about it. The event that I picked is the circus show. I watched it last Thursday and it was very interesting. The show was for adults only and there was a quite a bit of nudity and raunchyness. The show was definitely very entertaining and not at all what I expected. Some of the skits were hilarious while others I didn't understand at all. I thought some were very silly and I didn't know why they had included them in the show. The best skit was two boys pretending to be from the movie Brokeback Mountain and replaying a lustful scene where they start to realize how they feel about each other. It was really funny and The boys starting to acrobat type things together. There was also another scene where a girl was tripping on mushrooms and everything in the show was fluorescent and the lights were turned off. Some of the things they did in the show I hadn't realized they could show those things on campus.

  3. The article that was read by our classmates was extremely relevant to people our age. I agreed with what the writer had to say. People get caught up in their own lives, and tend to focus on themselves more especially when they are having success. It seems to be that the outside world only matters when things are not going our way. The author of the article mentioned that Americans tend to view America as a superior city on top of a hill. I would have to agree with this statement because I have never really felt any different. I'm not saying I have ignorant views on the rest of the world, I just have not had the drive to inform myself about affairs outside of the world unless it could directly affect me.
Our teacher took a survey in class and asked everyone if they were taking a second language. Only two people raised their hands. After that she asked how many people were required to take a second language for their major, nobody raised their hand. This played into the authors theory. America is focused much less on the outside world and Americans do not have the drive to learn about the world outside of America.

The conference that we had before Thanksgiving break was very helpful. You reminded me that we could right a forth essay for the portfolio instead of using one of our other essays. There were a lot of life changing events that happened in my family recently and us all coming together during Thanksgiving day was a much needed reunion. I will right more to you about the events in my personal blog, as well as in the Thanksgiving break paper that I am going to begin writing. The final week of this english class is almost up, and I wanted to thank you for taking your time in teaching me and my classmates this year. You definatly having a different perspective as to what is important to teach, and what strategies in writing will be useful to us in life, a quality that my previous English teachers never bothered to bring up. So thank you!
more blogs and posts to come,
